CSP Abu Dhabi Terminal Project
On September 28, 2016, COSCO SHIPPING Ports, a subsidiary of COSCO SHIPPING, formally signed a concession agreement with Abu Dhabi Seaport Authority. According to the agreement, the two sides shall establish a joint venture to run the phase-II container terminal at Khalifa Port. The CSP Abu Dhabi Container Terminal is the first greenfield project controlled by the Group Overseas. As a large automated terminal for modern container yard in the Middle East, the terminal applies the operation modes of quayside bridge crane automation and yard automation. It has a water depth of 16.5 meters and a shoreline that spans 1,200 meters. The terminal can accommodate large ships with a capacity of 20,000 TEUs each, with an annual design handling capacity of 2.5 million TEUs.
The construction of the CSP Abu Dhabi Container Terminal kicked off in November 2017, and it officially started operations on December 10, 2018. It boasts the largest container freight station in the Middle East, covering a land area of about 275,000 square meters.
The CSP Abu Dhabi Container Terminal commenced commercial operations on April 20, 2019. This terminal is not only a significant project under the Belt and Road Initiative, but it also enhances the service capacity of the Khalifa Port. As a result, the Khalifa Port has climbed from being the 89th largest container port in the world to the 25th, solidifying its position as a key shipping hub with a competitive edge in the Gulf region.
